Two passengers die as car plunges into Oyo river

Two passengers' bodies were retrieved by the Oyo State Fire Service after a car fell into the Ariyo River near Amuloko in the state's Ona Ara Local Government Area on Friday night.

A Toyota Avensis with an unidentified registration number is said to have lost control and went off the road into the river.

Maroof Akinwande, the chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, said in a statement on Saturday that the victims had been found and turned over to the Nigeria Police Force.

“A distress call was received at exactly 21:40hrs on Friday, May 29, 2026, regarding a road traffic accident involving a Toyota Avensis with an unknown registration number that lost control while in motion and plunged into a nearby river,” the statement said.

He said that after receiving the alert over the phone, firefighters were sent to the location right away.

“Immediately the information was received, fire officers led by ACFS Amoo promptly mobilized to the scene. On arrival, it was confirmed that the vehicle had swerved off the road and submerged in the river,” Akinwande said.

He claimed that two casualties were successfully recovered from the submerged vehicle by the rescue squad.

"By using all required rescue operational procedures, the rescue team started operations right away and successfully recovered two casualties from the vehicle," he stated.

Afterwards, the victims were turned over to the Ogbere Target Police Station in Ibadan police officers under the command of ASP Adesuwa Sesan for additional investigation.

According to Akinwande, the fire department responded to the incident quickly and carried out the recovery effort in accordance with protocol.
