16 foreign persons, including three Nigerians, are being prosecuted in the US for suspected election-related offences, such as voting illegally and pretending to be an American citizen.

The US Department of Justice revealed the cases on Friday, stating that the defendants had been charged in various federal districts with offences ranging from wire fraud, naturalisation, and illegal voter registration and voting by non-citizens.

The three Nigerians are Joshua Nmelichukwu Akpom, 27; Helen Sayen Adams, 67; and Gladys Adaeze Okafor, 56.

Okafor, a citizen of Nigeria and a lawful permanent resident of Massachusetts, was previously detained on suspicion of registering to vote in the 2022 midterm election and the 2024 presidential primary.

Three Nigerians are among the sixteen foreign nationals being charged in the US for alleged election-related offences, including voting unlawfully and posing as an American citizen.

The defendants were charged in several federal districts with offences including wire fraud, naturalisation, and illegal voter registration and voting by non-citizens, according to the US Department of Justice, which made the cases public on Friday.

The three Nigerians are Gladys Adaeze Okafor, 56; Helen Sayen Adams, 67; and Joshua Nmelichukwu Akpom, 27.

Okafor, a Nigerian citizen and a valid permanent resident of Massachusetts, was previously arrested on suspicion of registering to vote in the 2024 presidential primary and the 2022 midterm election.
