Saudat Jibrin, a 19-year-old woman, was given a death by hanging sentence by a Kano State High Court for killing her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after they were married.

Judge Maryam Sabo ruled yesterday that the prosecution has proven the accusation of culpable homicide beyond a reasonable doubt.

Jibrin was given a 90-day window to file an appeal after the judge sentenced her to death by hanging.

The incident happened at Farawa Quarters in Kano on May 5, last year, according to the prosecution, which was led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki.

The prosecution claims that after serving her 30-year-old husband a bottle of "Zobo" drink that was purportedly tainted with a dangerous material, Jibrin attacked him with a knife and severed his throat. Idris's injuries proved fatal. 

During the trial, two prosecution witnesses provided testimony to bolster the defendant's case. Jibrin testified in her defense and refuted the accusation. 

Abdulfatah Muhammad, her attorney, pleaded with the court to be kind, claiming that she had undergone rehabilitation while in detention, including memorization of the Holy Qur'an. 

He asked the court to take into account the fact that she was the family's oldest child and that her younger siblings relied on her. Nevertheless, the court sentenced her to death by hanging after finding her guilty under Section 221(a) of the Penal Code.
